1. What is a Good Age to Start Potty Training?

A: First, it really depends on the development of the child. You may try potty training at 18 months though we recommend waiting until at least age 2. The closer they are to Preschool age the better. This is when a child is able to fully recognize their bodily functions particularly peeing and pooping.

Girls typically potty train between age 2 and 2 1/2 while Boys typically potty train between age 3 and 3 1/2. If your child is has still not potty trained while everyone else’s child has, it is okay. Your child will potty train soon. However, if you are genuinely concerned about your child’s development it is recommended you see your child’s pediatrician. Developmental delays can play a part in potty training.

Note: You can read the story about Jennifer’s son Caleb in its entirety in the e-book regarding the effects of developmental delays and potty training.

2. I am Ready to Get Started with Potty Training. What do I do?

A: You want to make sure your child is ready for potty training as well. As exciting as this time can be, it is recommended your child shows signs of readiness before beginning. Your child needs to be developmentally ready as this is a very important time in development for them.

I encourage parents to go ahead and either sign up for our seven week mini e-course newsletters that are sent out on a weekly basis or go ahead and purchase the e-book and just read it. While it is designed to get your child potty trained in one weekend, it is possible to read it in sections then begin potty training on down the road.

3. Your website and blog has a lot of helpful information. I am thinking about buying the book. How do I know if it will work for me and my child?

A: Great! It is very important to know that this book is designed for the parents and children who are ready NOW to potty train. It requires complete dedication of the parents for one full weekend with no distractions. This e-book can be broken down into sections and done on a stretched out schedule as well. We often deal with parents who are discouraged that potty training hasn’t gone well. What we find out is the child is either too young to be potty training or the parents are extremely tense (pressured) to get the potty training done. If you are feeling stressed about potty training it is best to take a break. Children do pick up that parents are tense or stressed and will resist potty training. Thus, the e-book or for that matter, nothing will work successfully. In the case that anyone is unhappy we do offer a complete money back guarantee.

6. For months I have been working with my child on potty training. There has been very little progress. What am I doing wrong?

A: You are doing nothing wrong! Some children are not developmentally ready yet. The only way to know if your child is completely ready for potty training is to at least try it. Parents often get frustrated or pressured with potty training in order to save money on diapers, they get tired of changing diapers or their child has to be potty trained to get into a certain school. The best thing a parent can do is stop, relax and prepare themselves for potty training by building a positive attitude.

7. Changing diapers is getting to me. It’s costing us money, my back hurts and I am tired of the smelly diapers. I want to get my child potty trained as soon as possible. Can I get started right away or do I have to wait until my child shows signs of readiness?

A: It is so important you wait until your child is showing signs of readiness. Pushing your child to potty train because you want them out of diapers is not a reason to begin potty training. You want to keep the potty training process a very positive experience in this very important time in development for them. This is a huge milestone that takes dedication and readiness of both the child and parents. Sign up for the free mini course to learn more.

8. We are expecting a baby soon and want our child to be potty trained. Do I start now or wait until after the baby is born?

A: Congratulations! While expecting a baby is an exciting time, it can also be an anxious time. You wonder how you will be able to handle taking care of two children, three or four or more. It is so important to stay as positive as possible especially around other children. If you are wanting to potty train just to have one child out of diapers then potty training needs to wait. Potty training is an important time during development. If you child is showing readiness and you can dedicate one weekend to potty training then go for it. Make sure that the potty training is consistent and after the child is born someone is spending quality time with your child while maintaining consistency with the potty training.

9. Soon I will be returning to work and have started potty training my child. How can I make sure my child is adjusting to the changes and continues potty training successfully?

A: Keep the schedule as consistent as possible even when the changes are taking place. If a new babysitter will be taking over, have them visit your home with you present while potty training. You want your child to become accustomed to the new care provider ahead of time.

You can also give your child a favorite toy, blanket or another comfort to take with them while potty training. Keep potty training as comfortable as possible.

10. My family has given me their opinions about potty training my child. They say I should be doing it as soon as possible. I feel it is best to wait until my child is showing readiness. Who is right?

A: In the “old” days parents potty trained their children as soon as they started walking and talking. There was no such thing as showing signs of readiness.

Today, it is more important that your child is developmentally ready for potty training. When your child begins to stay dry during naps and bedtime, wants a diaper change because they soiled the one they are wearing, then it is time to begin the big transition.

Pressuring a child to potty train is going to lead to disaster. Resistance is one of the most common problems parents complain about with potty training.

11. My child was doing great with potty training. Now he/she has went backwards. What happened?

A: One, are you staying consistent with the potty training? This can be every 30 minutes, every hour, every two hours, etc. Two, have there been any important changes in the household such as a parent going to a new job, new baby, separation, new school, etc? Third, have there been any other significant or stressful issues in the home?

12. We are a family of multiples getting ready to potty train. Will your e-book work for me?

A: Yes! With multiples and potty training it is very similar families who potty train children within a few years of each other. It varies.  Children may learn from the older or the younger siblings. Developmentally speaking, it depends too. We teach parents to first and foremost create a positive environment beginning with their attitude about potty training. It is so important to be positive and encouraging as this is a developmental milestone with one, two, three or even more children!
